NHS England Maternity and Neonatal Programme have developed a maternal care bundle to establish a baseline of best practice in maternal care across five clinical areas associated with poor outcomes.

Maternal mortality rates in the UK have risen by 26% since 2010.  Thrombosis and thromboembolism remain the leading cause of maternal death. Improvements in care could have made a difference in 45% of deaths rising to 66% for women who were recent migrants.

In October 2024, the Strategy and Policy Committee agreed the development of a Care Bundle to address increasing rates of maternal mortality. This will establish a baseline of best practice in perinatal care in a limited number of areas, alongside interventions and actions which can be taken to improve maternal outcomes. The aim is to publish the care bundle by the beginning of 2026 to allow ICBs and providers to plan for implementation and delivery from April 2026.  The development of the care bundle will therefore be evidence based, and each element will need to meet agreed inclusion criteria.
