Perinatal Pelvic Health Services (PPHS) Launch Event

Following on from our invitation for Expressions of Interest sent out at the end of last year, we are now opening up official online booking for colleagues to join us as we celebrate the hard work, dedication and collaboration that has enabled the successful initial implementation of the PPHS.

Research shows that one in three women experience urinary incontinence in the first year after having a baby and up to three quarters of these women continue to experience this in the following 12 years after giving birth. A further one in 10 women experience faecal incontinence and another one in 12 will have a pelvic organ prolapse.  Although pelvic health conditions such as these are common, they are frequently underreported, often due to embarrassment or lack of awareness that help is available.  Pelvic health conditions are treatable, and early support can significantly improve symptoms and long-term wellbeing.

The Greater Manchester Perinatal Pelvic Health Services (PPHS) has been developed collaboratively to increase current services and improve the prevention, identification, and treatment of pelvic health conditions during pregnancy and following birth, with the aim to ultimately reduce the number of people living with pelvic health conditions postnatally and in later life.

Objectives and aim

1. Establish shared understanding and purpose - What is the PPHS and why is it needed. Create a strong message of the need to improve women’s pelvic health long-term with earlier, easier access to expert care in pregnancy and up to one year postnatally. The impact on women’s overall health, quality of life, and impact on the NHS.

     Aim - attendees leave knowing what PPHS is.

2. Build confidence in the service model and pathways - Demonstrate that the PPHS is evidence based, defined referral pathways, expert trained staffing for safer care, accessible for patients, GPs and clinicians.

     Aim - attendees leave knowing when to refer, how to refer and what happens next.

3. Secure engagement and leadership endorsement - encourage pelvic health advocacy, position PPHS as a core component of perinatal care, an uplift not an add on.

     Aim - attendees endorse PPHS and clinicians feel ownership and commitment to supporting it.
