WEBINAR: Bowel Cancer Screening Inequalities Insight Project

16 June 2026 11:00am – 12:00pmBST (+01:00)
Location TBC

Understanding motivations and challenges for people with a positive FIT to proceed to colonoscopy living in deprived areas

Presented by Inequalities Team, Vaccination and Screening Programme, featuring Solutions Research,

Please note that the date for this webinar has now changed to 16 June

About the Session

This session shares findings from a nationally commissioned insight project exploring why some people with a positive faecal immunochemical test (FIT) do not proceed to their Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) appointment and/or colonoscopy, and what can help people move forward with further investigations. People from lower socio-economic groups, those living in deprived areas, and individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds are at greater risk, as they have lower uptake rates for this next screening stage.

Drawing on qualitative insight from screening services and people eligible for bowel cancer screening across England, the session highlights key barriers, system-level challenges, and practical actions that can support more informed decision-making and reduce inequalities in follow-up testing.

What the Session Will Cover

  • Key motivators and barriers influencing progression from positive FIT to SSP and colonoscopy
  • How understanding of risk, benefits and purpose of colonoscopy shapes decision-making
  • Practical friction points (invites, timing, transport, work/caring responsibilities) and what helps
  • Communication needs across different communities (including language, literacy and health system familiarity)
  • Service and pathway variations that can unintentionally contribute to inequalities
  • Opportunities to strengthen consistency in recording and follow-up of outcomes
  • Evidence-informed recommendations for frontline teams, ICBs and programme partners

Why Attend?

Insight from national research

Hear key findings from an insight programme including perspectives from bowel screening services and people eligible for screening, highlighting real-world challenges and opportunities.

Practical learning for frontline teams

Understand what helps people move from a positive FIT result to SSP and colonoscopy, and where small changes can make a meaningful difference.

Actionable recommendations

Take away clear, evidence-informed recommendations to support improved engagement, delivery and follow-up.

System-level perspective

Learn how pathways, appointment mechanisms and data recording can unintentionally contribute to inequalities — and what can be done to address them

On‑Demand Access

The session will be recorded and shared on the NHS Futures Vaccinations and Screening Reducing Inequalities Hub, allowing access to shared learning and future reference materials.
