GIRFT 2026 fellows programme showcase

Since October 2022, the GIRFT Clinicals Fellows programme has undertaken a large variety of projects, mainly focusing on clinical improvement work to support the wider GIRFT programme, such as elective recovery, the high-volume low complexity (HVLC) initiative and environmentally sustainable healthcare.

This showcase will give you the opportunity to hear from the 2025/26 cohort of GIRFT fellows as they present their innovative projects.   These promise to be valuable insights and discussion in subjects varying from rationalising tray equipment to centralising low volume surgery.

We look forward to hearing from the following GIRFT fellows:

• Michael Ayres, specialist registrar in anaesthetics at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and the National Medical Director’s fellow. 
  Project: Risk holding by resident doctors. 
• Amir Khan, chief registrar in trauma and orthopaedics at Medway NHS Foundation Trust.
  Project: Reducing waiting lists in trauma and orthopaedics.
• Rebecca Martin, specialist registrar in trauma and orthopaedics at Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust.
  Project: Volume outcome relationships in ankle surgery. 
• Robert Sandler, registrar in rheumatology and general internal medicine at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
  Project: Reducing rheumatology waiting lists.
• Katherine Creamer, specialist registrar in dermatology at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust.
  Project: Decarbonising dermatology surgery pathways. 
• Osama Elghropy, senior clinical fellow in ophthalmology at Manchester University NHS Foundation.
  Projects: Improving outpatient pathways through Patient Initiated Follow-Up (PIFU) in ophthalmology. 
• Majd Abusharar, registrar in urology at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust.
  Project: Decarbonising urology pathways.
