For this year’s Chief AHPs event, we will be working in partnership with Health Education England and the Council of Deans of Health, to deliver an event focused on student and clinical placement expansion. As it is one of the high impact actions for the AHP workforce Improvement Programme to deliver the objectives agreed in the upcoming People Plan, we hope to achieve representation from all trusts across England at this event.

The aim of the event:

The event aims to bring Chief AHPs and Heads of School from HEIs, across regions, to discuss the demand gap and what can be done to increase student places and the subsequent clinical placements to be able to deliver the expansion in the courses.

Context for this event:

The majority of new AHPs qualify through pre-registration education, ensuring growth in this route is therefore central to achieving our aims.

HEIs have highlighted placement capacity as a barrier to increasing current intake levels and we need to understand better what is behind this trend, but initial discussions with the Council of Deans of Health suggest expansion could be achieved with better coordination and alignment between HEIs and NHS providers, supported by a continued focus on increasing applications to AHP courses.

It has also been identified that there is significant variation with regards to system architecture to support the AHP workforce with regard to professional development, education and research, including coordination of AHP clinical placements.

Sustainable growth in the AHP workforce is vital to delivering the ambitions of the Long Term Plan, this event explores the interventions required to deliver the growth required.
