Could you spot the signs of an eating disorder?

As part of the NHS England Children and Young People's Mental Health and Wellbeing Transformation Programme, the West Midlands Clinical Networks are working in partnership with Beat to provide applied professional development workshops across the West Midlands. These workshops are free of charge and are aimed at teaching, pastoral and healthcare staff within schools in Coventry and Warwickshire who have direct contact with young people who may develop eating disorders.

The sooner an eating disorder is treated, the better chance someone has of fully recovering. Leaving the illness untreated allows it to become more ingrained and harder to treat. By providing school professionals with the skills, tools and knowledge they need to enable the earliest possible access to treatment, we’ll take an important step towards reducing the number of children and young people who need emergency referral. The free sessions will equip school-based professionals with increased awareness of the psychological constructs that underpin an eating disorder, giving delegates knowledge of effective referral procedures and what they can do to confidently relate to and support children and young people.

Key learning outcomes:

- The signs of eating disorders and the psychology behind these serious mental illnesses

- How to approach someone you’re concerned about with confidence and empathy

- How and where to make an effective referral

Places on these workshops are strictly limited and we are asking organisations to nominate only one member of staff to attend and then to disseminate their learning to their own organisation following the workshop. This workshop is aimed at teaching, pastoral and healthcare staff within schools in Coventry and Warwickshire who have direct contact with young people who may develop eating disorders. This may include:

- School nurses

- SENCOs

- CAMHS link workers

- Head of PSHE

- Lead/head of wellbeing/pastoral care

- Student support officers

- School counsellors

People who should attend include: school nurses, key workers, CAMHS liaison workers, PSHE leads and others with a key responsibility for pastoral care.
