Webinar series: Demand and Capacity planning using system modelling approaches for ICSs

Are you interested in hearing how Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) could use modelling and simulation approaches to tackle complex issues that expand across several organisations which share as aim improving population health and needs?  The national Demand and Capacity team are hosting a series of webinars to explore what you need to do to get started with system modelling and best practice in a range of system modelling approaches from System Dynamics to Discrete Event Simulation. Please note that these webinars are for staff working in NHS, social care and government staff working in the public sector.

Microsoft Teams meeting virtual joining instructions will be sent to you the day before the webinar.  If you have any queries please contact the Demand and Capacity team on our email address at the bottom of this page. If you are unable to attend these webinars, the recordings will be uploaded to our the Demand and Capacity Network FutureNHS space here: Demand and Capacity Network - FutureNHS Collaboration Platform

You are invited to join the following webinars:

  • Improving Patient flow between Acute, Community and Social care (IPACS) open source simulation tool | Tuesday 6th June, 10.30am - 12.00pm
  • Introduction to the System Dynamics modelling approach | Thursday 29th June, 13.00pm – 15.00pm
  • More webinars including applied case studies will be added in the coming weeks and months.

Improving Patient flow between Acute, Community and Social care (IPACS) open source simulation tool | Tuesday 6th June, 10.30am - 12.00pm

This webinar will showcase the Improving Patient flow between Acute, Community and Social care IPACS project and open source simulation tool. The IPACS project was funded by Health Data Research UK. It ran from May 2020-March 2023. The project was undertaken by a research team of six from Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (BNSSG ICB) (Dr Richard Wood and Dr Paul Forte), University of Bath School of Management (Prof. Christos Vasilakis and Dr Zehra Onen Dumlu) and University of Exeter Medical School (Prof. Martin Pitt and Dr Alison Harper). The IPACS project aimed to investigate what might constitute 'optimal capacity' along different parts of the complex care discharge pathways form acute hospital to community healthcare.

The IPACS simulation model is a high-level computer model of the discharge-to-assess (D2A) pathways. It takes a set of input parameters (from an Excel file) and estimates potential future service outputs (occupancy, number of patients with a discharge delay, number of days waiting for discharge, total system costs) based on different configurations of parameters. The model accounts for variation in inputs and outputs, and presents results over time. The model is now available to download and use on github. Join this webinar to hear from the developers about this project and model and how you can apply it in your system to improve patient flow.

Getting started with System Dynamics with the Demand and Capacity team | Thursday 29th June, 13.00pm – 15.00pm

Join the Demand and Capacity team at NHS England to learn about System Dynamics modelling and how it can be used for demand and capacity planning. Topics covered will include suitability of this modelling approach, principles and concepts, construction of causal loop diagrams and introduction to stock-and-flow models There will be an opportunity to ask the team questions and hear from your peers about work across England.
