Who we are: Dementia United (DU) is Greater Manchester’s dementia strategy to make the city the best place to live in the world with dementia. We are part of Greater Manchester Health and Social Care Partnership and reflect the collective commitment across the ten localities to improve the lived experience of people living with dementia in Greater Manchester.
DU objectives: Dementia diagnosis rates are already some of the best in England, but we need to improve post-diagnostic support. By identifying patients early we can support them to live well and to manage their own health, prevent deterioration and social isolation through regular monitoring, and avoid unplanned admission to hospital and long-term residential care. We aim to provide high quality healthcare in the community to prevent hospital admission, to provide high quality hospital care and to prevent unnecessary increases in length of stay.
Our success so far: We have engaged extensively across the health and social care system in Greater Manchester and are currently implementing a three-year Work Plan for 2018 – 21. We have already made significant progress with new Greater Manchester standards for mild cognitive impairment and delirium, two illnesses strongly linked to dementia, and have worked with Transport for Greater Manchester to make public transport more accessible for those living with dementia and their carers.
Why the event: People living with dementia and their carers are at the heart of this transformation programme. The event is part of our ongoing engagement with them, as well as with health and social care commissioners, providers, wider public services, businesses, and voluntary sector groups. It will enhance and maintain the profile of DU and our work. DU are hosting an event during National Dementia Action Week, with the intention of celebrating what has been achieved over the last year in dementia care, across health, social care, third sector and voluntary sector organisations. Dementia was nominated as one of the early priorities for Greater Manchester devolution and there have been a great number of improvements already being made, which we can continue to build on over the coming few years.
We are hosting an event during the Alzheimer’s Society National Dementia Action Week (week commencing Monday 20 May 2019), with the aim of re-energising and focusing us on the journey we are taking together, in order to make Greater Manchester, the best place to live with a diagnosis of dementia.
It is hoped that the event will encourage the sharing of good practice, as well as offering the opportunity to network and find out about services across Greater Manchester.
The event will have market stalls from all ten localities in Greater Manchester. These market stalls will be for delegates to browse during the breaks, with the emphasis on having something tangible for delegates to take away, experience or sign up to on the day.
300 delegates; where we are aiming for two thirds of the audience to people with a lived experience of dementia and their carers.
Professionals and stakeholders from the field of dementia care and voluntary sector organisations.
