                                                                  2 - 4pm, Thursday 26 June, 2025
Would you like to learn more about the barriers to DES uptake amongst 20-40 year olds living in deprived areas and connect with colleagues about engaging with this cohort?

The National DES Portfolio & Equalities Teams have joined forces to host an online workshop and debrief for staff involved with delivering Diabetic Eye Screening (DES) services.
This workshop builds on our recently commissioned insights project to better understand why this cohort are less likely to attend DES and what are the key barriers and opportunities. Researchers interviewed and surveyed over 110 patients and DES providers and have made six recommendations alongside a set of key ‘guiding principles’ for services.
The National teams are keen to work with DES services to confirm how best to implement these recommendations; share best practice; and support them as they continue to engagement with this cohort.
The workshop will:
  • Outline the research findings and recommendations from Solutions Research;
  • Launch the DES Service Briefing Pack;
  • Share proposed next steps for service input and comments;
  • Provide an opportunity to share best practice and local learning amongst colleagues.
Speakers:
  • Michelle Lloyd, Managing Director, Solutions Research
  • Khadidja Bichbiche, Consultant in Public Health Medicine, Deputy Director of Equalities
  • Katherine Jordan, Head of Diabetic Eye and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening  Programmes
  • Dr Robyn Fletcher, Consultant in Public Health, Senior Clinical Lead for Diabetic Eye and Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programmes
Who Should Attend?
This webinar is designed for staff involved with delivering DES services and anyone interested in improving the uptake of the Diabetes Annual Care Processes, as well as NHSE regional colleagues, systems, and ICB colleagues.
DES uptake and 20-40 years living in deprived areas
DES uptake rates are lowest amongst 20-40 year old, with people living in deprived areas and from ethnic minority groups amongst having the highest rates of non-attendance. This is compounded by increasing rates of T2D among young people, which is more aggressive and has a higher prevalence among deprived communities and minority ethnic groups. Most people with T2D under 40 years are from deprived areas and over 70% are obese.
Can’t Attend? All webinars will be recorded and available on the  Reducing Inequalities Hub - Vaccinations and Screening - FutureNHS Collaboration Platform afterwards.
