Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) webinar: ETOC review, step down and discontinuation

Join the Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Thursday 30 July 2026 for our webinar focusing on the review, step down and discontinuation of Enhanced Therapeutic Observations and Care (ETOC).  
 
This webinar will demonstrate that ETOC levels should be managed as a dynamic process; reviewed, adjusted and discontinued as needed. Trusts will showcase how they apply these processes to ensure care remains proportionate to patient safety and clinical need.  

The session will focus on how organisations have embedded safe and transparent patient-centred processes for changing the levels of ETOC required, highlighting the pivotal role patients and their families play. 

The webinar will be chaired by Lucy Bates, Director of Patient Care, Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Lucy will introduce the proposed principles which will be outlined in the amendment to the existing Embedding Therapeutic Practice guide and will be joined by colleagues from other trusts who will share their journey in this space.  

We recognise that the examples shared throughout this webinar may not be directly applicable to your organisation and that everyone may be at varying places in their journey, however we are hoping this webinar will inspire you to think differently. 

This event will be useful for anyone within your organisation responsible for the provision and monitoring of ETOC, including but not limited to nursing teams, ETOC teams, nursing workforce leads and staffing leads. 

About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme 

Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way. 
 
NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
