Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) webinar: workforce planning and deployment
Join the Nursing Directorate Workforce Team from 1pm – 2pm on Tuesday 20 October 2026 for an Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) webinar exploring workforce planning and deployment.
This webinar supports the launch of our latest chapter of our ETOC improvement guide focusing on workforce planning and deployment.
The session will explore how NHS organisations can integrate ETOC into workforce planning and deployment decisions to safely meet patient care needs. We will examine local approaches to workforce planning, safety and quality requirements, and share how trusts have successfully implemented deployment models.
The webinar will be chaired by Ian Joy, Executive Director of Nursing at The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Ian will be joined by trust colleagues who will share their journey, experience, challenges and successes in this space.
We recognise that organisations are at different stages of their ETOC journey and that the approaches shared may not be directly transferable to every setting. However, we hope the session will provide practical insights, showcase innovative approaches, and encourage new ways of thinking about local workforce planning and deployment approaches.
This event will be useful for anyone within your organisation responsible for the provision and monitoring of ETOC, including, but not limited to, ETOC teams, nursing workforce leads and staffing leads.
This webinar is part of a series that has been running since September 2024 and sits alongside our ETOC Universal Support Offer. As part of this offer, we have a host of webinars, lunch and learns and case studies which cover various topics across the programme; we encourage colleagues to use these resources to support their local initiatives.
About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme
Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way.
NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
