Enhanced Therapeutic Observations and Care (ETOC) lunch and learn: preventing deconditioning
NHS England’s Nursing Directorate will host its seventh lunch and learn session, on Thursday 4 December 2025, from 12:00pm to 12:45pm. The session will focus on preventing deconditioning within the context of enhanced therapeutic observation and care (ETOC).
During the session, our speakers will share their journey and local initiatives to prevent deconditioning through therapeutic activities and a person-centred approach to care – aimed at improving patient outcomes and experience.
The event will conclude with an open session, where you can share your own insights, experiences, and questions with our expert panel.
About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme
Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way.
NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
