Enhanced Therapeutic Observations and Care (ETOC) webinar series: preventing deconditioning

23 October 2025 11:00am – 12:00pmBST (+01:00)
Virtual (MS Teams)

Join the Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team between 11:00am - 12:00pm on Thursday 23 October 2025 for the thirteenth webinar in our enhanced therapeutic observations and care (ETOC) series.

This webinar will explore how organisations have worked to support patients across their stay to prevent deconditioning when providing ETOC and to reduce it’s use through embedding therapeutic practices into routine care.

The webinar will be chaired by James McLean MBE, NHS England’s Regional Chief Nurse for the North West region. James will be joined by trust colleagues who will share their journey in this space.

This webinar is intended to share what is happening locally to prevent deconditioning from a number of organisations who are working in different ways to support their patients through therapeutic activities and a person centred approach to care. We understand that the examples shared throughout this webinar may not be directly applicable to your organisation and that everyone may be at varying places in their journey, however we are hoping this webinar will inspire you to think differently.

This event will be useful for anyone within your organisation responsible for the provision and monitoring of ETOC, including, but not limited to, ETOC teams, nursing workforce leads, staffing leads and transformation/QI teams.

About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme

Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way.

NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
