Enhanced Therapeutic Observations and Care (ETOC) webinar series: Workforce Deployment
Join the Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team between 11:00am to 12:00pm on Thursday 25 September 2025 for the twelfth webinar in our enhanced therapeutic observations and care (ETOC) series.
This webinar explores Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) workforce deployment, examining how healthcare organisations have successfully implemented different staffing models to deliver ETOC services in ways that are both responsive to patient needs and operationally sustainable.
Chaired by James McLean MBE, NHS England’s Regional Chief Nurse for the North West region, who will be joined by trust colleagues sharing their journey in this space.
This webinar will share the different approaches organisations have adopted for developing their ETOC workforce deployment models, demonstrating how varied strategies can be successful depending on local patient populations, challenges, and opportunities.
Effective ETOC delivery across NHS organisations should be therapeutic, holistic, and focused on improving both patient outcomes and experience. This session will provide valuable opportunities to connect with colleagues, share practical insights, and learn from proven approaches that are making a real difference to patient care.
We understand that the examples shared throughout this webinar may not be directly applicable to your organisation and that everyone may be at varying places in their journey, however we are hoping this webinar will inspire you to think differently.
This event will be useful for anyone within your organisation responsible for the provision and monitoring of ETOC workforce deployment models, including, but not limited to, ETOC teams, nursing workforce leads, staffing leads and transformation/QI teams.
About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme
Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way.
NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
