Enhanced Therapeutic Observations and Care (ETOC) webinar series: Workforce planning and deployment
Join the Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team between 12:00pm - 1:00pm on Thursday 15 January 2026 for the sixteenth webinar in our enhanced therapeutic observations and care (ETOC) series.
This webinar explores how NHS organisations can integrate ETOC into workforce planning and deployment to safely deploy staff and meet patient care needs.
We will examine local approaches to workforce planning, safety and quality requirements, and share how trusts have successfully implemented deployment models that have eliminated band 2 and 3 agency use in line with recent guidance.
The webinar will be chaired by James McLean MBE, NHS England’s Regional Chief Nurse for the North West region and SRO for the ETOC programme. James will be joined by trust colleagues who will share their journey in this space.
We understand that the examples shared throughout this webinar may not be directly applicable to your organisation and that everyone may be at varying places in their journey, however we are hoping this webinar will inspire you to think differently.
This event will be useful for anyone within your organisation responsible for the provision and monitoring of ETOC, including, but not limited to, ETOC teams, nursing workforce leads, staffing leads and clinical education teams.
About the Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC) programme
Demand for Enhanced Therapeutic Observation and Care (ETOC), often referred to as enhanced care, 1:1’s or specialling, has increased due to our aging population and complexity of patient presentation. Nursing leaders report the need to identify innovative workforce models to ensure that patient safety and experience can be maintained in the most appropriate way.
NHS England's Nursing Directorate's Workforce Team, in collaboration with Safer Staffing colleagues, have launched a programme of work which aims to support systems to develop and improve their approach to how enhanced therapeutic observations and care is assessed and provided, with patient safety and experience at the centre.
