Frailty - Fire Risk and Emollients and Managing Postural Support

19 June 2025 2:15pm – 4:00pmBST (+01:00)
Location TBC

This is a 2 part webinar which is related to frailty.  The first part is on fire risks in the use of emollients which are commonly used in people who are bed bound and the second part is on a piece of work in related to posture.

Part 1: Emollients and Fire Risk

Following the tragic deaths of a number of Norfolk residents who used emollient creams and who smoked, key agencies have been collaborating together to support improved awareness and training across the Norfolk workforce. Although this work has had a focus for people with a learning disability the risk of emollient cream from and smoking and other heat sources are applicable to all. This Norfolk work has been picked up by the National Fire Chiefs Council who are using this Norfolk work nationally. This webinar will cover the work Norfolk and Waveney have done in this area and present the developed training.

Speaker:

Andy O’Connell – Senior Nurse Manager for LeDeR. I am a registered paediatric nurse with experience of working across multiple areas of acute and community care. I have worked specifically with people with learning disabilities since 2018. Since 2022 I have managed the service Learning from Lives and Deaths: People with a Learning Disability and Autistic People (LeDeR) for Norfolk and Waveney.

Part 2: Posture Friends

Posture Friends is a framework of Posture and Enabling training, with an accompanying online resource booklet, that was developed following the learning from LeDeR 2018.

The purpose is to educate care and support workers, family carers, and people with lived experience about the importance of postural care, as well as the importance of keeping physically active.

It includes demonstrating what ‘good’ posture looks like, the effects of poor posture, improving functional ability, increasing physical activity, and spotting signs of deterioration in a person with a learning disability. Posture Friends aims to encourage a cultural change in our attitude towards care, with the overall aim being to improve the health outcomes, mortality rates, experiences, and quality of life of people with a learning disability.

This webinar will give you an overview of the main themes covered in Posture Friends training.

Speaker:

Suzy White - Physiotherapist.  I worked as a Physiotherapist in the care sector, in Neurological Complex Care for many years, and I am the Clinical Lead for the Prevention and Enablement team at HCPA (Hertfordshire Care Providers Association.
