NHS England has published new statutory guidance to support systems and trusts to refresh their green plans. Please join us on Friday 21 March at 14:00 – 15:30 for a virtual drop-in session designed to support systems and trusts in refreshing their Green Plans. Registration will close on Thursday 6 March at 09:00. Greener NHS will send an email on the same day with the joining instructions for the event.

This event will:

  • Provide an overview of the key objectives and asks related to medicines, net zero clinical transformation, supply chain and procurement, digital transformation, and workforce .
  • Outline some of the support available to systems and trusts in refreshing their plans
  • Answer your questions - questions can be submitted in advance by emailing greener.nhs@nhs.net by close of play Wednesday 19 March and can be asked during the event.

Who is it for?

This event is for NHS staff who lead on or are involved in the delivery of NHS green plans. It will be of particular value to sustainability leads  in trusts and ICBs, as well as clinical, procurement, digital and workforce leads whose roles include green plan delivery.

Please ensure you sign up using your NHS email, otherwise you will be unable to join this event.

Further context

In 2020, the NHS became the world's first health system to commit to reaching net zero emissions. The Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service report set out the scale of ambition. The Health and Care Act 2022 reinforced this commitment, placing new duties on Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), NHS trusts and foundation trusts to consider statutory emissions and environmental targets in their decisions.

Trusts and ICBs are expected to meet these duties through the delivery of board-approved green plans.

The updated guidance supports systems and trusts to refresh their green plans and continue to prioritise interventions that support world-leading patient care, save money and reduce inequalities, while tackling climate change and broader sustainability issues.

You can find FAQs, additional information, and helpful resources to support the development of your green plan on the Greener NHS Knowledge Hub.
