NHS England has partnered with NHS Clinical Commissioners to support Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in ensuring that they can use their prescribing resources effectively and deliver best patient outcomes from the medicines that their local population uses. CCGs asked for a nationally co-ordinated approach to the development of commissioning guidance in this area to ensure consistency and address unwanted variation.

Working with their members NHS Clinical Commissioners developed a list of items that they consider need not be routinely prescribed in primary care.  NHS England established a joint clinical working group in partnership with NHS Clinical Commissioners, with prescriber and pharmacy representatives, and relevant national stakeholders. This joint clinical working group met to refine the list and propose draft recommendations.

A consultation has been launched to seek the views of CCGs, GP and other health professionals, patient, carers and members of the public on the proposed draft recommendations for 18 defined medicines.

In addition to the 18 defined medicines the consultation also aims to ask broad questions about Items that are prescribed in primary care and are available over the counter. There are no recommendations proposed at this stage for this element of the project as the consultation aims to gather insight to consider in further policy development.

We want to give industry the opportunity to engage with the consultation in an inclusive and transparent manner therefore are inviting individuals to learn more about the proposals and provide responses.  Please note: this event is an online meeting only:
