Mastering Assertiveness in the Workplace; Skills for Clinical and Non-Clinical Conversations
Title: Mastering Assertiveness in the Workplace; Skills for Clinical and Non-clinical Conversations
Provider: Susie Edwards
Delivery: Virtual via MS Teams
Overview:
This interactive and practical session is designed to support SAS doctors in developing greater confidence, presence, and professional courage in the workplace. Through practical exercises, peer discussion and real-world scenarios, we’ll explore what it means to speak up effectively — whether in a team meeting, one-to-one interaction, or challenging situation. We'll unpack the dynamics of power, tone and respect, and practice tools for assertive, respectful communication. This is a safe and energising space to build confidence in holding boundaries, challenging unhelpful behaviours, and advocating for oneself and others. Participants will leave with renewed clarity, courage, and a set of practical techniques to use in everyday clinical life.
- Define what assertiveness means in the context of healthcare and distinguish it from passive or aggressive communication
- Apply practical assertiveness tools in both clinical and non-clinical conversations
- Recognise how tone, body language, and word choice influence confidence and clarity
- Set clear and respectful boundaries in professional interactions
- Navigate power dynamics and respond effectively to challenging behaviours
- Use assertive communication techniques to respond to and challenge unhelpful behaviours, including bullying or harassment, in a calm and constructive way both for yourself and when advocating for others
