The NHS Long Term Plan sets out a commitment to increase the number of social prescribing Link Workers by 1,000 by March 2020. These Link Workers will be embedded as part of multi-disciplinary teams within Primary Care Networks.

From July 2019, Primary Care Networks will be able to draw down central NHS funding to support the expansion of social prescribing Link Workers locally. This funding will enable local areas to build on existing social prescribing schemes or to start discussions locally (i.e. where no local scheme is currently commissioned). In support of this, we are asking all local areas to bring together key stakeholders to develop a shared local plan. We envisage that this local planning process will be led by the CCG and will include local authority and public health leads, representatives from the CCG primary care team and Primary Care Networks, as well as local strategic leads for the VCSE sector.

These regional events are designed to support local discussions around the employment of Link Workers and the development of a shared local plan for social prescribing for 2019/20.
