The National Health Service or the NHS as we have come to know it is turning 70 on 5 July 2018.
Two weeks before the NHS was launched, on the morning of 22 June 1948, the former German cruise liner Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury docks carrying 492 passengers from the West Indies.
Some of the passengers were the first people to also work in the new National Health Service.
In the years that have followed many more people from around the world have come to work in the NHS and made a huge contribution.
Today, people of black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds make up a fifth of the NHS workforce and the 200 plus nationalities represented.
These awards are a thank you to those who have gone before us, an opportunity to recognise the present and a look to the future.
If you are fasting and would like to attend, please specify in the dietary requirements for provisions to be made.
