NHS IMPACT Masterclass: Behavioural science

27 June 2025 12:00pm – 12:50pmBST (+01:00)
Virtual (MS Teams)

Join Prof Amar Shah, National Clinical Director for Improvement for an empowering event on Behavioural science who will be joined by Dan Berry, head of the behavioural science unit at NHS England. The unit works on a range of challenges across the NHS, for staff and patient behavioural change. In 2012, Dan set up and led the first behavioural insights team at the Department of Health. Dan subsequently worked for five years as director of a global communications agency, before joining NHS England during Covid.

Behavioural science and QI: how the latest behavioural science tools fit within improvement approaches; and how to align while cutting the jargon

This masterclass will show how insights from behavioural science can help us better 'get under the skin' of some of our perennial improvement challenges in the NHS. For instance:

  • why it's hard for groups of staff in one team or organisations to truly work collaboratively with another team.
  • why we don't 'borrow with pride' innovations developed elsewhere.
  • why some QI programme may fail, or may fail to sustain, even though they seemed like a good idea at the time.

Behavioural insights help us understand human behaviour and decision making as it is in the real world: when people are busy, distracted, risk averse, and focused on the here-and-now. When our actions fall short of making a desired impact, it's (mostly)  because of systematic decision-making biases and mental short-cuts. Behavioural science helps us understand what those are, identify when they are helpful and thus we should design NHS systems to go with the grain, or identify when they are unhelpful and how to overcome them.

It will be an interactive session, followed by a group discussion and is for anyone working in the NHS who wants to find out more.
