NHS.pycom Show & Tell: Saving life and learning from death with Python

Open-source applications such as Python will be key drivers to delivering the robust data and analytics we need in health and care. In the clinic, the utilisation of Python-based frameworks and tools have the potential to improve patient outcomes and reduce the burden on frontline healthcare workers

The NHS Python Community for Healthcare (NHS.pycom) is hosting a community event on the 26th of May 2022 from 11 am to 12 pm, focusing on the use of Python by NHS clinicians. This event builds off a previous show & tell which explored the use of python in clinical settings. You can watch recordings of previous talks on the NHS.pycom YouTube channel, here.

Please note that the Microsoft Teams invite for the event will be sent separately to the email address used to book a ticket a day before the event.

The agenda is as follows:

AI Deployment Engine (AIDE): a new hospital operating system

  • Speaker: Haris Shuaib
  • Role:Head of Clinical Scientific Computing, Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust
  • Description: An overview of the progress of the AI Deployment Engine (AIDE) — a world-leading program to enable AI at the point of care. Led by the London AI Centre, in partnership with 10 of the largest London National Health Service Trusts, the minimum viable product for AIDE is already live and progress is happening at speed. AIDE utilises a combination of Python and MONAI, a PyTorch-based framework for deep learning in healthcare imaging.

Life and Death with Python: QI-Py by Clinicians

  • Speakers:  Matthew Stammers, Michael George
  • Roles:
    • Matthew Stammers - Consultant Gastroenterologist/Data Scientist, University Hospital Southampton (UHS)
    • Michael George - Clinical Fellow in Data Engineering, UHS
  • Description: Clinicians often feel stumped when trying to cross the divide between programming and deploying those innovations in real-world clinical settings. Questions such as: How do I connect my python script to the hospital database? How do I navigate the IG barriers? and How do deploy the outputs to affect clinical practice and get stakeholders interested? We hope to inspire you to break through these barriers.
