Overview of the Updated Green Plan Support Tool for Trusts

Greener NHS and Federated Data Platform (FDP) teams have been working together to redevelop the Green Plan Support Tool (GPST). A new version of the GPST can be accessed on the Federated Data Platform Homepage. This version of the tool is intended for use by NHS trusts only, for colleagues involved in developing and delivering trust-level Green Plans. The redesigned tool aligns to the new Green Plan Guidance and adds new functionality responding to your feedback. Please join us on Tuesday 29 July 2:00 - 3:00pm to hear an overview of the tool.

The session is aimed at trust sustainability leads, energy managers, or other staff directly involved in the delivery, monitoring, or reporting of NHS trust Green Plans. It will focus on features and functionality specific to trust use. A separate version of the GPST designed for ICBs is currently in development and expected to be released later this summer. A dedicated webinar for ICB colleagues will follow.

This event will:

  • Provide an overview of the tool, including how it can be used to self-assess performance against the actions and metrics in the new Green Plan Guidance, understand your organisation’s contribution to the NHS Carbon Footprint, and monitor and report on progress.
  • Highlight key changes in the new version of the GPST, including how it aligns with the updated Green Plan Guidance.
  • Demonstrate new functionality and features developed in response to user feedback.
  • Outline how to access and navigate the GPST through the Federated Data Platform homepage.
  • Answer your questions - questions can be submitted in advance by emailing greener.nhs@nhs.net by close of play Friday 25 July and can be asked during the event.

Who is it for?

This event is for trust NHS staff — Specifically for sustainability leads, energy managers, or other staff directly involved in the delivery, monitoring, or reporting of NHS trust Green Plans.

Please note that the tool is being released as part of a phased rollout, and this webinar is specifically intended for trusts. The ICB section of the tool is still in development and is expected to be released later this summer. A separate webinar for ICB colleagues will be arranged at that point.

Accessing the tool

The tool can be accessed via the Greener NHS Analytics Workspace on the Federated Data Platform Homepage.

Due to organisational policies, if you have not logged into FDP in over 120 days then you will have lost your access to the tool and will need to re-apply for access. We are sorry for any inconvenience this causes. To access the tool again, please request access via the Greener NHS Analytics Workspace tile on the homepage.

Please note that only the trust version of the tool is currently available. If you are an ICB colleague, you will be contacted when the ICB version is launched later this summer.

Setting up a FDP account

If you or a colleague do not have an FDP account, information on setting one up can be found here: Accessing the NHS Federated Data Platform (FDP) | Rise 360

If you have any problems logging into FDP or accessing the tool please contact greener.nhs@nhs.net in the first instance.

Further context

In 2020, the NHS became the world's first health system to commit to reaching net zero emissions. The Delivering a Net Zero National Health Service report set out the scale of ambition. The Health and Care Act 2022 reinforced this commitment, placing new duties on Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), NHS trusts and foundation trusts (referred collectively in this guidance as trusts) to consider statutory emissions and environmental targets in their decisions.

Trusts and ICBs are expected to meet these duties through the delivery of board-approved green plans.

The GPST can be used to self-assess performance against the actions and metrics in the new Green Plan Guidance, understand your organisation’s contribution to the NHS Carbon Footprint, and monitor and report on progress.

You can find FAQs, additional information, and helpful resources on the Greener NHS Knowledge Hub.
