Workshop details

AMR - the role of community pharmacy
The challenge of stopping inappropriate antibiotic use lies with everyone. How can pharmacy teams working in the community support antimicrobial stewardship?

Building a pharmacy professional

Pharmacy education, training and development needs to keep pace with changes within pharmacy and wider healthcare. How can we ensure that pharmacy and wider NHS teams are equipped to support learning at all stages of the pharmacy career?

The brief objectives for the session are:

  • Understand the role and types of supervisors a learner needs.
  • Describe supervision models for a range of pharmacy professionals at different stages of their careers.

When less is more; exploring deprescribing

Deprescribing is synergistic with inappropriate polypharmacy. It is the process of tapering, discontinuing or stopping medicines to reduce potentially problematic polypharmacy, adverse drug effects and inappropriate or ineffective medicine use.

We will be working with Lisa McCarthy, who is an expert in this field to deliver an interactive workshop with the following broad aims;

  • Explore the attitudes and experiences of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians regarding deprescribing
  • Identify the opportunities and limitations of the acute setting for deprescribing (and how to manage this)
  • Identify potential enablers to support deprescribing including the initiation of a deprescribing initiative and future network

What can we learn from the private sector?
How can insight from private providers improve care for all? This workshop will explore how two-way learning across private and public healthcare providers can raise the bar for everyone.

Integrating mental and physical health pharmacy services
Mental Health has been highlighted as a key priority area for the Department of Health and Social Care. Reports such as the Mental Health Five Year Forward View, Future in Mind, Stepping Forward to 2020/21, and the soon to be published Carter Review into Mental Health and Community Services set out the improvements that will be expected by 2021 and offer guidance as to what changes should to be considered in order to achieve them.   A crucial aspect of this is the development of a system wide approach to provide more person-centred care that is responsive to the requirements of people with both mental and physical needs.  How can pharmacy services adapt their approach across the sectors to ensure better quality and safer person-centred care for those with mental health problems?

Tackling variation in clinical care
Using a range of sources, applicable to all sectors of pharmacy, we will be working together in this workshop to identify reasons for variation in clinical practice and how these may impact on outcomes and finding solutions to these.
