The IP3D programme: better diabetes perioperative pathways in primary care

This webinar, hosted by Professor Gerry Rayman (GIRFT joint clinical lead for diabetes) will discuss the benefits of adopting GIRFT’s Improving the Perioperative Pathways of People with Diabetes (IP3D) programme, and how you can enable your patients with diabetes to be better prepared for surgery. 

The objective of the webinar is to introduce the IP3D project to GPs and their practice staff, who have an important role in supporting patients on perioperative pathways.

The IP3D project provides an implementation solution to improve the perioperative pathway of people with diabetes undergoing surgery and has been successfully trialled and shown to significantly reduce surgical length of stay, with fewer complications and a better overall experience for patients with diabetes and staff. >Read more

Attendees will hear from experts who can demonstrate the benefits of this programme:

• Rachel Allen, diabetes perioperative specialist nurse at Ipswich Hospital, who will present her first-hand experience of implementing this pathway in her trust.
• Kim Howson, diabetes perioperative specialist nurse at James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, who will present on the importance of good glycaemic control prior to surgery.
• Louise Lewis, lead perioperative nurse at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, who will discuss the implementation of their service, with a model based in primary care.

• Dr Clare Hambling, GP and specialty advisor for NWICS, National Clinical Director for diabetes and obesity for NHS England, and chair of the Primary Care Diabetes Society, who will talk about how GPs can best support patients with their post-surgery care.
