In responding to the recommendations from the Freedom to Speak Up review, NHS England (NHSE) is currently piloting a support scheme for whistleblowers from a Primary Care setting (Dentists, Optometrists, GP practices, community Pharmacists).  NHS Improvement (NHSI) is currently co-developing a similar scheme for Secondary Care (Hospitals).

Whistleblowers on the scheme have suffered detriment because of raising their concerns and the schemes have been developed in a way that offers an individualised package of support matched to the needs of each person.  Robust application processes and support mechanisms ensure that anyone on the schemes can evidence no previous performance issues and applicants are at the point at which they are ready for employment or placement opportunities.

There are over 80,000 current vacancies within the NHS and it is also recognised that the significant skills and abilities of the applicants could easily transfer over into other sectors.  It is with this in mind that we are extending this invite wider than public sector employers.

This work has generated a great deal of interest and some employers have already started to consider how they can become involved. We are extremely interested in discussing with potential employers/supporters how the whistleblowing support scheme is developing and how we might work together to offer work place opportunities to these people.

To this end, NHSE & NHSI are working together to organise several workshops throughout England, to meet with organisational representatives, where we can discuss what options might be on offer by potential employers.  These could look like work placements, shadowing opportunities, work trials etc and what support organisations would need, to be able to offer such possibilities. These sessions will be for employers only so that we can discuss your concerns and consider how best we can address them as part of the ongoing programme of work, and will be held under Chatham House Rules.

Target Audience – Very Senior managers with decision making capability, or with agreed delegated abilities on behalf of their organisation.
