Introduction

March 14 2018 is World Delirium Awareness Day #WDAD2018

  • Delirium is an acute medical emergency which commonly affects older people.
  • The mortality rate is similar to sepsis and higher than myocardial infarction with 1 in 5 people who have a delirium dead within a month.
  • Early detection is important as around half of cases of delirium are potentially reversible.
  • Around a third of delirium is preventable.

Aim

To raise awareness of delirium and the associated poor outcomes as well as launch a Greater Manchester wide collaboration around delirium.

Actions to take from #WDAD2018

  • Commit to using the term 'delirium'.
  • Screen your patients for delirium.
  • Listen to patient and family stories about the experience of delirium.
  • Engage your local leaders in a discussion of delirium.
  • Educate health and social care professionals about delirium.
