Introduction
March 14 2018 is World Delirium Awareness Day #WDAD2018
- Delirium is an acute medical emergency which commonly affects older people.
- The mortality rate is similar to sepsis and higher than myocardial infarction with 1 in 5 people who have a delirium dead within a month.
- Early detection is important as around half of cases of delirium are potentially reversible.
- Around a third of delirium is preventable.
Aim
To raise awareness of delirium and the associated poor outcomes as well as launch a Greater Manchester wide collaboration around delirium.
Actions to take from #WDAD2018
- Commit to using the term 'delirium'.
- Screen your patients for delirium.
- Listen to patient and family stories about the experience of delirium.
- Engage your local leaders in a discussion of delirium.
- Educate health and social care professionals about delirium.
